I look at online specimens collected by early explorers too ... really enjoy it, especially if collected somewhere I know. And the idea of you standing on a table in such a place!
I am always amazed at how well-preserved herbarium "flat plants" seem to be, even retaining their colour. I never got beyond putting a plant between blotting paper in the pages of a book and placing more heavy books on top of it.
I first came across the concept if a herbarium when researching lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) for a horticulture essay - and seeing online a specimen from one of the explorers who headed west from the east coast of America.
It's great for you to be able to see the actual specimens in the flesh.
Nice one :)

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-82779181717497100342015-07-28T19:39:13.998-06:002015-07-28T19:39:13.998-06:00Thanks, diversifolius! Also, it's arid enough here that things dry fairly fast using the sun, fortunatelyHollishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10788942181934895493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-20241529992746968002015-07-28T15:31:08.376-06:002015-07-28T15:31:08.376-06:00The 'Land of flat plants'! And I have to say I never saw a plant vasculum; although I never work per se in a herbarium I did related work and I am quite familiar with the felted blotters and changing them every day. We use to collect in bags or carry the wooden press with us (even up on the mountain).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-4086911172187485282015-07-24T07:45:09.586-06:002015-07-24T07:45:09.586-06:00Thanks, Gayle.
