If you look up that valley you can see the tailings of Asmus Boysen's gold mine, although my findings so far have only yielded chalcopyrite--so I suspect he found more copper than gold. The mine goes back 1400 feet into the amphibolite--the same rock as the tunnels are bored through. Mr. Boysen had built the original dam at the narrows (first tunnel going north) to both power his mine and to provide electricity to the fledgling towns of Shoshone and Riverton, and eventually to Thermopolis. Around 1902 there was a large Spring runoff that clogged up the dam, flooded the railroad tracks, and brought about a lawsuit from the railroad that eventually broke him. Mining ceased and the dam was demolished. There is some interesting history in that area.Cloudfishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02472713367508166638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-58972854378045679072015-08-21T14:39:20.735-06:002015-08-21T14:39:20.735-06:00Thanks for visiting Gabriela, I'm glad you'...Thanks for visiting Gabriela, I'm glad you've enjoyed these posts!Hollishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10788942181934895493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-4813378892736240342015-08-21T08:03:21.711-06:002015-08-21T08:03:21.711-06:00Fascinating rock-storytelling! All the rock activity seems devastating but I guess that taking place over great geological time it wasn't a sudden catastrophe.
I followed a couple of your links and found those interesting, too, especially the Laramide Orogeny and its effect on fancy dinosaurs and the whole Great Unconformity and missing time further explained.
It's awesome that your brown road signs label the geological times.
By the way, I love terms like Laramide Orogeny - sounds like the name for a science fiction or fantasy novel.
Keep up the good work - I'm TRYING to take it all in!
Best wishes :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-41377483804731871352015-08-16T18:05:19.911-06:002015-08-16T18:05:19.911-06:00I thought about that, Ken ... it was hard to figur...I thought about that, Ken ... it was hard to figure out even with a guidebook!
