Several sites describe the same kind of joints and weathering, but the only mention of it taking place underground is in Halka Chronic's Roadside Geology of Arizona (book). She doesn't devote much space to it however.Hollishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10788942181934895493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-85889457940797092052016-03-23T17:48:40.482-06:002016-03-23T17:48:40.482-06:00Now that you mentioned "soft", Beth ... ...Now that you mentioned "soft", Beth ... some of those rocks look like marshmallows! We had to fly north of the regular route because of a bad thunderstorm on the planes. It seemed to be an arc from Las Vegas through Utah, then Wyoming, and then the Badlands and on to Iowa and Illinois. I was able to see the Grand Canyon, many of the red rocks of Utah, and the Badlands, but there were clouds over the Rocky Mountains. What an amazing country!Beth at PlantPostingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10473637655960119672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5192250381057989170.post-85417959544001361872016-03-18T15:09:59.331-06:002016-03-18T15:09:59.331-06:00I've never heard of 'tor lands' before...I've never heard of 'tor lands' before. We've actually visited the Cheesewring on a foggy and atmospheric day a few years ago while on our way further down into Cornwall. With the umlaut the word means "greetings." As in the "grüss aus" postcards of Germany - meaning "greetings from -." There is a famous grus in the Wind River Canyon where it cuts through the Owl Creek Mtns (if a grus can have fame). It's primarily a chemically weathered Precambrian granite which weathered in place. In some places it looks like solid rock but you can drive the pick end of a hammer up to the handle in it.Lynn Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02885808956452761511noreply@blogger.com
